Endoscopy can refer to any investigation that looks on the inside of a organ or cavity ('endo'=inside, 'scopy'=look at). Typically, endoscopy relies on flexible scopes and fibre-optic technology, but newer technology like video capsule endoscopy allows data to be collected by a self-contained device.
